Alpaca Facts
Alpaca Facts
Alpacas are members of the camelid family and are close relatives of the llama and camels. They originate from South America and are well suited to the Australian climate and conditions.
Alpacas are gentle, intelligent animals that respond well to attentive care and handling. In Australia, alpacas are kept for their fleece, which is superbly light, soft and warm. The fleece of an alpaca is second only to polar bear fur for its insulation properties.
There are as of the beginning of 2006 currently just under 70, 000 alpacas in Australia, whihc makes it the largest national herd outside of South America.
Alpacas can live and breed for around 20 years, with the babies known as 'cria', adult females as 'hembras', and the males as 'machos'.
A fully grown alpaca is around 1m at the shoulder and would have weighed 6-8kgs at birth. A female alpaca is pregnant for approximately 11 and a half months, and can have up to 3 cria in 4 years.
People from all walks of life own alpacas from the commercial breeder and fleece producer, to stud breeders, to small land owners and hobbyists who just enjoy having them around.
